From today Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7, What does that mean for anyone using Windows 7 from today? Well, in a nutshell, you will not receive the all-important security updates and patches that keep your PC safe.
Hackers are always looking to target systems with vulnerabilities and according to latest statistics website, Statcounter, 26.79% of Microsoft Desktop Share runs windows. This leaves about 1 in 4 computers at risk of an attack.
How will it affect me?
Hackers will be hard at work trying to find flaws in the system, targeting weaknesses with viruses and malware and Windows 7 machines are more likely to be infected, Microsoft wrote on its website
Hackers have used malware to invade and disrupt systems in the past, in May 2017, the NHS was hit by a WannaCry ransomware attack, along with many Business who still used Windows XP, this lead to millions of pounds being lost.
A government report in 2018 stated this could all be avoided if the NHS had updated their computers and ran the weekly security patches, closing these vulnerabilities down.
What should I do with my windows 7 PC?
Windows 7 will still work and function, but you will become at risk and less and less secure.
Microsoft is urging people to move to Windows 10, the latest operating system from Microsoft sells for £120 and the Pro version £219.
To install Windows 10 you will need a minimum of 1GB of Ram, 1Ghz Processor and 16Gb of hard drive space, but it may not always be possible to run Windows 10 on your older device.
